KOLKATA : BRIGHTON
I wanted to tell you a bit about how this project came about; apart from Kolkata being just down the
road from me, I loved the handmade crafts you find here! Really beautiful! I began talking to Alan and Siobhan about what they do here in terms of their goals for the shop and that’s when I really became interested in working with them and getting an exhibition up.
Siobhan’s campaign in helping villages and those that have migrated to the cities in India is so inspiring to me and I am glad to meet someone who has really put everything in to raising people’s awareness of less privileged countries and the homeless and how we can do something about it. What’s also inspiring is that this team is working out how they can help these villages, not with handouts, but in a way where the villagers can use their skills, or learn new ones to create a fresh economy and viability for themselves, their families and their community who were once on the streets with next to nothing. Siobhan showed me some photographs of her latest visit to India. It was the festival of Holi at the time which means the “Festival of Colour”. I loved the atmosphere her pictures captured; full of fun, colour, life... human spirit. The artwork “Holi” is devoted to Siobhan and her team. For everything that they stand for, I really do applaud them!
